Background: A three day international emergency conference has begun in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa to give support to the people of Southern Africa.
SYNOPSIS: The meeting is being held under the auspices of the Afro-Asian People's Solidarity Organisation, whose Secretary General Mr. Yusuf El Sibai arrived in Addis Ababa on Friday (29 October). Mr. El Sibai, wearing the light suit, was accompanied on the flight by a delegation from the Soviet Communist Party who were also attending the conference. Mr. El Sibai and the leader of the Soviet delegation, Mr. Tapew, were greeted by the Permanent Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ato Getacew Kibert.
The guests were also welcomed by members of the National Theatre performing traditional songs and dances.
Later Mr. El sibai called on all people to support the people to Southern African. He explained the subject that would be covered at the conference which was to start on Saturday (30 October).
He said the conference would focus its attention on political and economic sanctions against racist regimes; the rejection of Bantustanism and Transkei; the banning of arms supplies to racists and the freeing of political prisoners. Mr. El Sibai said the struggle waged by the peoples of South Africa. Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) and Namibia (South West Africa) was one struggle. The conference would also be planning further meetings.
