  • Description

Santo Domingo rebels turned out in force Monday for a huge rally marking the Fourteenth of July -- the anniversary of an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow former dictator Rafael Trujillo.

The Fourteenth of July is also the name of a pro-Castro movement in the rebel ranks. But the Castroites were not allowed to dominate the rally.

Caamano and other rebel leaders first attended a Requiem Mass for the men who died in the unsuccessful revolt against Trujillo.

This was followed by a rally of all political factions. The crowd was estimated by newsmen as double that which turned out for a rival government rally the day before. There was evidence that the government forces had to bolster their crowd with people brought by trucks from the countryside.Attendance at the rebel rally appeared to be purely voluntary.

Caamano made a brief appearance at the rally and members of his government spoke.Girl members of the Fourteenth of July movement brought flowers and a huge portrait of Caamano to the eternal flame at the Dominican heroes monument.A young leader of the movement condemned "Yankee Imperialism" and the crowd in Independence Square responded with the chant "Caamano, si, Yankees, no.
