  • Description

French envoy, former Foreign Minister Maurice Couve de Murville, met Lebanese President Rashid Karami on Thursday (20 November) in Beirut in his continuing efforts to mediate between warring factions.

    M. Couve de Murville was accompanied byu George Gorse, his aide, and Hubert Argod, the French Ambassador to Lebanon.

He has been sent by French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing to try to assist with efforts to find peace but his visit has been marked by a sudden upsurge in violence.

It is believed that some of the increase is an attempt to undermine his efforts to mediate.

On Friday (21 November) police say 20 bodies were found and more than 100 people were kidnapped.

France has made clear its opposition to any attempt to partition Lebanon as a means of cooling tensions between the Christian and Moslem communities and has said that a unified Lebanon is essential to the balance in the Middle East.
