  • Description

A BRITISH MILK COMPANY HAS SO FAR ACHIEVED WORLD SALES OF HALF-A-MILLION GALLONS OF LONG-KEEPING MILK, WHICH IT FIRST PUT ON THE MARKET IN FEBRUARY 1965. OFFICIALLY CALLED ULTRA HEAT-TREATED MILK, THE MILK IS PRODUCED BY THE EXPRESS DAIRY PLANT IN LONDON.

THE LONG-LASTING MILK (LONGLIFE MILK) IS THE RESULT OF NINE YEARS' RESEARCH, COMPANY SPOKESMEN SAY. OVERSEAS COUNTRIES WHERE FRESH MILK IS OFTEN UNOBTAINABLE HAVE BEEN READY CUSTOMERS. THE MILK STAYS FRESH FOR MONTHS, WITHOUT REFRIGERATION. ONCE A CARTON IS OPENED, IT STAYS FRESH AS LONG AS ORDINARY MILK.

METHOD OF PRODUCTION IS AS FOLLOWS: FRESH MILK IS HOMOGENISED AND SUBJECTED BRIEFLY TO EXTREME HEAT. IT IS THEN PACKED INTO ONE-PINT POLYTHENE-LINED CARTONS. THE CARTONS HAVE A LIGHT-EXCLUDING ALUMINIUM FOIL THAT RENDERS OXIDATION IMPOSSIBLE.
