  • Description

SINCE THEY WERE BUILT AROUND THE BEGINNING OF THE CENTURY THE STATIONS SERVING THE UNDERGROUND RAILWAY SYSTEM IN PARIS HAVE REMAINED ALMOST UNCHANGED. ABOUT THE ONLY NOTICEABLE ALTERATIONS HAVE BEEN, IN FACT, THE INTRODUCTION OF FLUORESCENT LIGHTS.

BUT THINGS ARE CHANGING DOWN ON THE METRO AND NOWHERE MORE SO THAN AT THE STATION FOR THE LOUVRE, WHERE PASSENGERS WILL NOW BE GIVEN A PREVIEW OF WHAT IS TO BE FOUND IN THE FAMOUS MUSEUM ABOVE THEM.

OPENED OFFICIALLY YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) BY THE FRENCH MINISTER OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS, M. MALRAUX, THE STATION HAS BEEN DESIGNED AS A SORT OF ANTE-ROOM FOR THE MUSEUM WITH REPRODUCTIONS AND PHOTOGRAPHS OF ITS SCULPTURES AND ANTIQUITIES PLACED IN THE ENTRANCES AND PLATFORMS.

GREAT CARE HAS BEEN TAKEN TO ENSURE THAT THE REST OF THE STATION BLENDS INTO THIS ARTISTIC BACKDROP AND EVEN THE BENCHES HAVE BEEN SPECIALLY DESIGNED IN STONE AND BRASS.
