    AT LEAST 11 PERSONS WERE ARRESTED TONIGHT (SUNDAY) IN LONDON AFTER A MASS PRO-RHODESIA RALLY IN TRAFALGAR SQUARE. THE RALLY WAS CALLED BY THE FORMER CONSERVATIVE COMMONWEALTH SECRETARY, MR. DUNCAN SANDYS, TO ADVOCATE THE RESUMPTION OF TALKS BETWEEN THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT AND THE BREAKAWAY RHODESIAN REGIME OF MR. IAN SMITH.

    ABOUT 150 POLICE WERE ON DUTY IN THE SQUARE, WHERE NEARLY 5,000 PERSONS SEETHED AROUND MR. SANDYS AND OTHER SPEAKERS ON THE BASE OF NELSON'S COLUMN.

    FOLLOWING THE RALLY, A CROWD OF DEMONSTRATORS UNDER A SEA OF BANNERS THREW QUIET DOWNING STREET - OFFICIAL RESIDENCE OF THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. WILSON - INTO UPROAR. A POLICE BUS HASTILY DRAWN ACROSS THE NARROW STREET PREVENTED THE DEMONSTRATORS FROM REACHING THE RESIDENCE OF MR. WILSON, WHO IN HIS COUNTRY RESIDENCE PREPARING TO LEAVE LATER IN THE DAY FOR ROME AND THE START OF EXPLORATORY TALKS ABOUT POSSIBLE BRITISH ENTRY INTO THE COMMON MARKET.

    IT TOOK SCORES OF POLICE, MOUNTED AND ON FOOT, NEARLY AN HOUR TO CLEAR THE DEMONSTRATORS FROM DOWNING STREET AND ADJOINING WHITEHALL, WHERE HUNDREDS MORE DEMONSTRATORS AND SIGHTSEERS BLOCKED TRAFFIC. CRIES OF "WILSON OUT" FROM CONSERVATIVES CLASHED WITH CRIES OF "SMITH OUT" FROM COUNTER-DEMONSTRATORS. THERE WERE ALSO BRIEF SCUFFLES AMONG THE RIVAL GROUPS.
