    ILYA EHRENBURG, ONE OF THE LEADING FIGURES IN CONTEMPORARY SOVIET LITERATURE, WAS BURIED AT THE NOVODEVICHIE CEMETERY IN MOSCOW ON MONDAY, 4 SEPTEMBER 1967. THE FUNERAL MEETING WAS OPENED BY NIKOLAI TIKHONOV, ANOTHER SOVIET WRITER WHO IS ALSO CHAIRMAN OF THE SOVIET PEACE COMMITTEE.

    A VICE PRESIDENT OF THE USSR-FRANCE SOCIETY, NIKOLAI LIUBIMOV, SPOKE OF THE ROLE EHRENBURG HAD PLAYED IN STRENGTHENING CULTURAL RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.

    FUNERAL ORATIONS WERE ALSO GIVEN BY ISABELLE BLUME, A VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE WORLD PEACE COUNCIL, AND SOVIET AUTHOR LEV KASSIL.

    EHRENBURG FOUND FAME ON SEVERAL LEVELS. HIS EARLY NOVELS CHARTED THE GROWTH OF INDUSTRIALISM IN THE USSR AFTER THE REVOLUTION AND WITH ONE OF HIS BEST KNOWN WORKS, "THE THAW" HE DESCRIBED THE DIFFERING POLITICAL AND SOCIAL CLIMATE IN RUSSIA FOLLOWING STALIN'S DEATH.

    DURING THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR AND WORLD WAR II HE WORKED AS A WAR CORRESPONDENT AND POLITICALLY HE WAS ACTIVE AS A SOVIET MP AND VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE WORLD PEACE COUNCIL.
