  • Description

TWO CUSTOMS OFFICIALS DIED IN A BIG FIRE IN EAST LONDON TODAY (SATURDAY). ABOUT 600 RAILWAY GOODS WAGONS, 300 MOTOR VEHICLES AND THOUSANDS OF POUNDS WORTH OF PASSENGER LUGGAGE WERE DESTROYED IN A BLAZE AT THE BRITISH RAILWAYS GOODS DEPOT AT BISHOPSGATE.

SURROUNDING ROADS WERE CORDONED OFF AS FLAMES AND SMOKE SWEPT UP TO A HEIGHT OF 100 FEET (30 METRES). MORE THAN 200 FIREMEN FOUGHT THE BLAZE AS NEARBY FAMILIES WERE EVACUATED FROM THEIR HOMES. TRAINS TO THE CLOSE-BY LIVERPOOL STREET PASSENGER STATION WERE STOPPED AND ELECTRIC SWITCHED OFF.

THE BODIES OF TWO MISSING CUSTOMS MEN WERE FOUND BY FIREMEN CLOSE BY THE OFFICE IN WHICH THEY HAD WORKED THROUGH THE NIGHT. THEIR OFFICE WAS SMASHED BY SEVERAL TONS OF DEBRIS AND TWISTED STEEL. UNDERNEATH ONE PART OF THE BUILDING WAS A BONDED STORE CONTAINING SPIRITS WHICH ARE BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN THE CAUSE OF A NUMBER OF LOUD EXPLOSIONS AT THE HEIGHT OF THE FIRE.

I was ten years old , had moved in to Keeling house that now famous block of ex council flats, the flat my parents had faced the city and on day prior to the fire it was a bitterly cold december day, our dad did not have time to put the beds up so we all slept on the mattresses that first night, we;d been given a toy telescope my younger brother and i and later that night i work up to see a kind of flickering on the living room wall, on waking my parents we could all see the huge blaze going on, with the aid of the telescope we could see firemen on ladders trying to fight the fire from above, our dad took us down the following morning and i remember seeing a huge bulldozer clearing the road of rubble.
