Background: Most intensive consultations were held by the Knesset factions of the National Religions Party & the Rafi wing of the Labour Ma'arach, at the Knesset and Beth Elisheva respectively, and sealing the fate of Mrs. Meir's minority govt. Or will it become a majority govt. after all? Whilst the oldtimers of the NRP were closetted in one room, the "young guard" of the NRP waited in another room and the question on the agenda was "Will the NRP vote for or against Mrs. minority govt. when she will ask for a vote of confidence next Monday or will the NRP abstain?". Whilst the young want a National Emergency coalition of all parties, the oldtimers were looking for a was to circumvent the Council of Rabbis' decision that they should not join the govt., unless Labour will submit to the demand of the religious, that "Who is a Jew?" should be decided on the basis of the religious law only; They were looking for a way around and possibly a way to join the govt. But their final meeting on this issue was postponed 3 times today and the last time until tomorrow morning. The Rafi wing, which met at Beth Elisheva, had on its agenda two other issues. The meeting lasted for close to 3 hours and in the course of it arrived first of all a delegation of the religious young guard and a short while later the Knesset whip of the Maarach Koshe Bar-Am and the Secretary General of the party Mr. Yadlin. They apparently came with a request by Mrs. Meir and the Mapai block of the party, which asked Rafi to try and meet Ma'arach to clear the tables and clean out of the way all difficulties, so that Rafi ministers Dayan and Peres could again accept cabinet posts in the next govt. This request will be considered by Rafi. Furthermore the Rafi meeting decided that they will under all circumstances vote for Mrs. Meir's govt. even if Dayan and Peres should decline the cabinet posts. It thus looks that Mrs. Meir will definitely be in a position to get a vote of confidence in the Knesset and maybe even that, come next Monday, Mrs. Meir will be in a po
sition to present a majority govt. based on the outgoing coalition.
