  • Description

With more than a touch of summers long-passed, the Henley Royal Regatta drifted into another historic year on Wednesday (July 4) complete with bright blazers, boater hats and parasols under the midday sun.

One of England's great sporting traditions, the Henley Regatta still manages to evoke the same relaxed nineteenth-century atmosphere that's persisted since the first races in 1839.

But just to prove its endurance, the Regatta has drawn a record entry of 250 crews this year, an increase of 25 on last year's entry, which was the previous record.

Henley remains the epitome of the rowing world, and this year it's attracted overseas entries from the Soviet Union, France, Australia, Ireland, Egypt, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland and Norway, as well as the customary host of Transatlantic oarsmen. Many of the crews come back to the Henley Regatta year after year, although -- strictly speaking -- it's not an international course. It's rowed on a narrow stretch of the Upper Thames which allows only two boats to race at one time, forcing a series of elimination heats.

The opening day at Henley was anything but slow, with eighty races in the space of eight hours of competition. The Royal Regatta stretches over four days.
