  • Description

THIS YEAR, THE INTERNATIONAL ICE PATROL CELEBRATES ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY.THE PATROL WAS FORMED SHORTLY AFTER THE FAMOUS "UNSINKABLE" LINER "TITANIC" COLLIDED WITH AN ICEBERG IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC ON HER MAIDEN VOYAGE IN 1912, AND SANK WITH THE LOSS OF 1,513 MEN AND WOMEN.

EXCEPT FOR PERIODS DURING THE TWO WORLD WARS, THE PATROL HAS MAINTAINED A CONTINUOUS LOOK-OUT FOR ICEBERGS AND OTHER FLOATING DANGERS IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC SEA LANES.

THE PATROL, UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE UNITED STATES COAST GUARD, PREPARES FOR THE "ICEBERG SEASON" WITH A PRELIMINARY AERIAL RECONNAISSANCE STARTING IN DECEMBER.FROM THIS MONTH, A SEA AND AIR WATCH WILL BE CONCENTRATED ON A VAST EXPANSE OF OCEAN SURROUNDING THE GRAND BANKS OF NEWFOUNDLAND.

COAST GUARD AIRCRAFT CARRY OUT THE MAJOR WORK OF THE PATROL.THEY ARE ASSISTED BY THE COAST GUARD CUTTERS, "ACUSHNET" AND "TAMAROA", BOTH MAINTAINED ON A 72-HOUR STANDBY BASIS.

THE CUTTERS ARE CALLED UPON WHEN HEAVY FOG LIMITS AERIAL ICE RECONNAISSANCE AND IF IT BECOMES NECESSARY FOR THEM TO STAND BY ICEBERGS IN THE SHIPPING LANES.

INFORMATION ON THE ICEBERGS NEAR SHIPPING LANES ARE BROADCAST TWICE A DAY FROM THE PATROL'S HEADQUARTERS AT ARGENTINA, NEWFOUNDLAND.EACH BROADCAST CONTAINS A REQUEST FOR ALL SHIPS TO REPORT ANY ICE SIGHTED, AND WHEN IN THE AREA BETWEEN LATITUDES 39 DEGREES NORTH AND 49 DEGREES NORTH AND LONGITUDES 42 DEGREES WEST AND 60 DEGREES WEST TO REPORT EVERY FOUR HOURS THE SHIP'S POSITION, COURSE, SPEED, VISIBILITY, SEA TEMPERATURE AND WEATHER CONDITIONS.

DURING PERIODS OF LOW VISIBILITY WHEN AERIAL ICE OBSERVATION IS INEFFECTIVE, THE SHIPPING REPORTS HELP THE PATROL TO LOCATE DRIFTING ICE AND TO KEEP THE POSITION OF THAT ICE UP TO DATE.

THE PATROL WAS FORMED AT AN INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION HELD IN LONDON IN 1914.SEVENTEEN NATIONS SIGNED THE TREATY AND ALL HAVE CONTINUED TO SUBSIDISE THE PATROL.THEY INCLUDE BELGIUM, BRITAIN, CANADA, DENMARK, FRANCE, GREECE, ITALY, JAPAN, LIBERIA, NETHERLANDS, NORWAY, PANAMA, SWEDEN, SPAIN, THE UNITED STATES, AND YUGOSLAVIA.

THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE VENTURE AND THE CONSTANT VIGILANCE THAT IT HAS MAINTAINED FOR THE SAFETY OF SHIPPING, HAS PROVED ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST SUCCESSFUL VENTURES IN PEACEFUL INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION.
