    THE MEN WHO BORE THE BRUNT OF THE BATTLE FOR SAIGON DURING THE VIET CONG OFFENSIVE LAST MONTH, THE ELITE RANGER UNITS OF THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE ARMY, WERE PRESENTED WITH MEDALS BY THEIR COMMANDER, COLONEL TRAN VAN HAI, IN A CEREMONY IN SAIGON ON FRIDAY.

    SOME OF THE MEDALS WERE PRESENTED FOR GALLANTRY IN AN ACTION NEAR SAIGON EARLY IN FEBRUARY ... AN ACTION IN WHICH THE RANGERS WERE LED BY A 13-YEAR-OLD BOY.

    THE BOY, TA VAN MANH, WAS ONE OF THE REGULARS ON PARADE ON FRIDAY TO RECEIVE MEDALS. HE LOST BOTH HIS PARENTS IN A VIET CONG ATTACK ON HIS VILLAGE. BUT WHEN HE SAW A RANGER PATROL HE LEFT THE REFUGEE COLUMN THAT WAS HEADING FOR THE CAPITAL TO JOIN THE SOLDIERS.

    HE WAS CHOSEN TO LEAD A RANGERS OPERATION AGAINST HIS HOME VILLAGE, AND WAS SAID TO HAVE KILLED ONE VIET CONG AND CAPTURED TWO.

    THE RANGERS ARE CONTINUING THEIR OPERATIONS AROUND SAIGON. A BIG HAUL OF WEAPONS CAPTURED FROM THE VIET CONG IN ONE RECENT ENGAGEMENT FIVE MILES (8 KILOMETRES) FROM THE CITY CENTRE WENT ON SHOW AT THE SAME TIME AS THE MEDAL PRESENTATION CEREMONY.

    IT INCLUDES ROCKETS, ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUNS, MORTARS AND MACHINE-GUNS. THE SHOW HAS THE ATMOSPHERE OF A FAIRGROUND, FAMILIES, COURTING COUPLES AND CHILDREN STROLLINGPAST THE GROTESQUE EXHIBITS AND UGLY PHOTOGRAPHS OF WHAT THEY CAN DO, PHOTOGRAPHS OF MUTILATED BODIES AND WEEPING REFUGEES. THE SHOW HAS BEEN CROWDED WITH SIGHT-SEERS SINCE IT OPENED.
