Background: IN KUCHING, THE CAPITAL OF SARAWAK, THE BRITISH COLONY IN BORNEO, THE ENTERPRISING CHINESE BUILT A TEMPLE, NAMED THE HUN NAN SIANG TNG TEMPLE. IT WILL PROVIDE A DECENT PLACE FOR WORSHIP FOR THE CHINESE IMMIGRANTS WHO HAVE NOW ADOPTED SARAWAK AS THEIR HOME.

THE RETIRING GOVERNOR OF SARAWAK, SIR ANTHONY ABELL WAS THERE AND HE WAS ATTENDING ONE OF HIS LAST FUNCTIONS AS THE GOVERNOR. HE LEAVES SARAWAK LATER THIS FEAR.

THE GOVERNOR COMPLIMENTED THE CHINESE FOR THEIR HARD WORK AND BUSINESS ACUMEN. THE CHINESE TODAY HAVE A NEAR MONOPOLY OF GOVERNMENT JOBS, BUSINESS AND OTHER ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES.

THE CHINESE HAVE ALSO SHOWN POLITICAL AWAKENING RECENTLY, BUT THE GOVERNOR TOLD THEM THAT PARTY POLITICS WILL RUIN THE RACIAL HARMONY OF THE MULTI-RACIAL COMMUNITY.

THE INDIGENOUS RACES OF SARAWAK - SEA DYAKS, LAND DYAKS AND MALAYS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN SUSPICIOUS OF CHINESE PROSPERITY.

THE GOVERNOR THEN DECLARED THE TEMPLE OPEN, AND DEVOTEES WHO HAVE BEEN WAITING SWARMED INTO THE INTERIOR TO WORSHIP.

THE INTERIOR OF THE TEMPLE WAS SUITABLY DECORATED WITH TYPICAL PIECES OF CHINESE ENGRAVINGS AND ART PIECES.

IDOLS OF CHINESE GODS WERE ON THE ALTAR, WHERE FROM NOW ON DEVOTEES CAN BURN JOSS STICKS AS PART OF THE PRAYER RITUAL -- A PLACE OF WORSHIP FOR THE CHINESE IN SARAWAK.
