  • Description

Hundreds of students marched through the streets of Stockholm yesterday (Sunday) in a further demonstration against allegedly "wasteful" Christmas spending. It was the second such demonstration in the Swedish capital less than a week.

Last Week some demonstrators marched through the city centre in a protest at what they called "the forthcoming Christmas glut". During that demonstration student speakers promised that stores and shops would be picketed throughout the buying season.

Yesterday the students lived up their promise. They carried placards calling for an end to Christmas waste and distributed leaflets stating their case. The money spent over Christmas, they maintained, could much more effectively be given to underdeveloped countries.

"Anti-Christmas" enthusiasm has spread in Sweden. Recently student and Christian organisations in Malmo and Gotenburg announced that they also planned anti-Christmas campaigns.
