Background: THOUSANDS OF FOOTBALL FANS RAMPAGED THROUGH HONG KONG STREETS ON TUESDAY NIGHT AFTER THE HONG KONG REPRESENTATIVE TEAM HAD BEEN BEATEN 6-0 BY AN ENGLISH SIDE. MORE THAN 250 RIOT POLICE WERE RUSHED TO THE HONG KONG STADIUM TO RESTORE ORDER.

THE TROUBLE STARTED SOON AFTER 10 P.M. AS THE MATCH WAS DRAWING TO A CLOSE. SPECTATORS SHOUTED AT THE BRITISH PLAYERS, ACCUSING THEM OF FOUL TACTICS.

ANGRY FANS BEGAN LIGHTING FIRES IN THE STANDS AND WITHIN MINUTES 15 SEPARATE FIRES WERE BLAZING AS THE CROWD OF 25 THOUSAND TRIED TO LEAVE THE STADIUM.

POLICE ARMED WITH RIOT GUNS, TEARGAS AND BATONS CHARGED MOBS TO DRIVE THEM FROM THE STADIUM INTO THE STREETS. OUTSIDE THE MOBS ATTACKED AND DAMAGED FIVE CARS AND AN AMBULANCE, WHICH HAD BEEN CALLED TO THE GROUND TO RUSH AN INJURED SPECTATOR TO HOSPITAL.

IT TOOK POLICE MORE THAN AN HOUR TO RESTORE ORDER IN THE AREA, BUT AT NO TIME DURING THE DISTURBANCE WERE ANY FIREARMS USED.

AMONG THE SPECTATORS AT THE GAME WAS THE COLONIAL SECRETARY, SIR HUGH NORMAN-WALKER.
