Uruguayan politician Dr. Jorge Batlle received a warm welcome on Tuesday (20 November) when he returned home after spending three weeks in a Montevideo goal for criticising military investigations into an economic scandal in 1968.
Dr. Batlle is head of the Unity and Reform section of the ruling Colorado Party of President Juan Maria Bordaberry. His arrest sparked a major cabinet crisis and the resignation of three ministers of his party faction.
The 45-year-old son of a former President had earlier in the day been granted provisional liberty by a military court judge.
He had been charged with offending army morale in a radio and television broadcast.
Relatives, friends and fellow politicians were at his home in Villa Biarritz to greet him.
Later, Dr. Batlle held a news conference. The hall was crowded with his followers, with hundreds more standing outside to hear him speak.
