  • Description

Although he has retired from full international football, Pele - the world's most famous footballer - has been making a 13 game tour of the world with his new club, New York Cosmos. The tour was organised by a soft drink firm.

On Saturday (13 September) the Cosmos played Italian League club Roma. Roma is not among the best few Italian club sides but they play to the usual high Italian standard. Eve with Pele and several lesser known but experienced imports the American side was clearly beaten, but by no means overrun.

The crowd had mainly come to watch Pele but for once the maestro had a quiet day. The younger, professional Roma defenders cut out many passes bound for Pele and Roma soon took the lead with a goal from Petrini.

In the second half Coyne equalised from close in for Cosmos with a well taken opportunity. A fine volley from Cordova soon restored Roma's lead and Negrisolo scored a textbook goal to complete Roma's 3-1 win.

During the Cosmos' tour Pele is conducting soccer clinics with his trainer Professor Julio Mazzei.
