  • Description

THE SECOND OF TWO 276,000 DEADWEIGHT TON OIL TANKERS, THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD, WAS LAUNCHED AT YOKOHAMA SHIPYARD, JAPAN, YESTERDAY (FRIDAY). THE FIRST TANKER WAS LAUNCHED AT ANOTHER JAPANESE YARD EARLIER THIS MONTH.

THE TWO HUGE VESSELS ARE AMONG SIX SUPER-TANKERS ORDERED BY THE NATIONAL BULK CARRIERS OF THE UNITED STATES FROM THE TWO YARDS.

YESTERDAY'S TANKER IS NOT YET COMPLETED. IN THE CEREMONY SHE WAS MOVED FROM THE OVERCROWDED BUILDING DOCK TO THE LARGER REPAIR DOCK AT THE YARD, WHERE WORK IS EXPECTED TO GO ON UNTIL AUGUST THIS YEAR.

THE SUPER TANKER IS 1,135 FEET (346 METRES) LONG, 190 FEET (53.5 METRES) WIDE AND 105 FEET (32 METRES) DEEP, WITH A DRAFT OF 72 FEET (21.9 METRES). LIKE ITS SISTER SHIP LAUNCHED THIS MONTH, IT CAN CRUISE AT A SPEED OF 15.5 KNOTS WITH A FULL LOAD.

THIS WEEK THE JAPANESE MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT RELEASED DETAILS OF A BASIC DESIGN FOR AN EVEN LARGER TANKER OF 500,000 TONS. ACCORDING TO THE MINISTRY, THE GIANT TANKER COULD BE BUILT IN JAPAN WITHIN "THE VERY NEAR FUTURE".
