  • Description

Heads of State of the four Tripoli Pact countries - the United Arab Republic, Sudan, Libya and Syria were meeting in Cairo today (Monday) for consultations on the Middle East crisis and the current series of clashes between Government troops and Palestinian guerrillas in Jordan.

The meeting is the fifth summit session of the Tripoli Pact countries since it was set up in December 1969, and the second since Syria joined last year.

President Nimeiry of Sudan, Gaddafi of Libya and Assad of Syria, were expected to hear a comprehensive review by President Sadat of political and military developments in the Arab-Israel conflict.

President Sadat went to Cairo International Airport yesterday (Sunday) to welcome President Nimeiry of Sudan to his country. After the formal ceremony the two men had informal talks.

President Sadat also met Mr Bahi Ladgham, the Tunisian chairman of the Higher Arab Committee charged with implementing the agreements between King Hussein and the guerrillas. Mr Ladgham had arrived in Cairo the previous day (Saturday) at President Sadat's invitation.
