  • Description

The fabulous Biltmore Club, former millionaire's playground in Havana was taken over by the Castro Government recently for conversion into a worker's rest centre.

Now run by officials of industrial unions, the club re-named the 'Cubanacan', covers 130 acres of high-priced land. Its amenities include a golf course, riding stables, luxurious beach chalets, and a million-dollar yacht basin.

It was the yacht basin that gave the Castro Government cause to annex the Biltmore. They claimed it was built with public funds "stolen" by ex-Cuban leader Batista.

Since it was taken over two months ago, seven thousand workers have enrolled. As membership also covers the worker's families, this means that a total of something like 22,000 people are enjoying the club facilities. Only 25 original members have enrolled, the rest have raised anchor and moved their yachts to another part of the ocean.
