    Thirty-two wives of Arab and African heads of state, or their representatives, attended the opening session of the Afro-Arab Feminist Conference in Cairo, Egypt, on Saturday (18 May).

    Mrs. Jihan Sadat, wife of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat invited the women to the conference. Queen Alia, the wife of King Hussein of Jordan, and the wives of the Presidents of Tunisia, the Lebanon, Dahomey, Togo and Somali were present.

    Egypt's Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Abdel-Aziz Hegazi, spoke at the opening session. He said Egypt would continue to strengthen its economic, spiritual and geographic links with neighbouring African and Arab countries whatever the sacrifices involved.

    The conference will study social and economic development as well as liberation movements in Africa and the Arab world.
