    Vitas Gerulaitas from New York and Janet Newberry from St. Petersburg, Florida made it a United States double when they won their matches on singles finals day at the Italian Open Tennis Championships in Rome on Sunday (22 May).

    SYNOPSIS: Ninth ranking Miss Newberry was matched against Renata Tomanova of Czechoslovakia, who is acknowledged as an impressive player. The America girl is ranked number nine in the world and was seeded fifth in Rome. She broke Miss Tomanova's survive twice in the first set and picked up on her opponent's errors to push home her advantage. Throughout the game Miss Newberry was the dominant player and eventually beat the graceful Czech 6-3, 7-6.

    Afterwards Miss Newberry described herself as "tired, thrilled and happy", saying that when the realised she was winning she got nervous. Her prize money -- GBP3,500 sterling (5,950 U.S. dollars).

    The mens singles -- and 22 year-old Vitas Gerulaitis is playing local idol Antonio Zugarelli -- under some stress from the partisan Rome crowd. But despite boos and catcalls as he won points, Gerulaitis played a brilliant game.

    Gerulaitas was on top throughout the first two sets, but Zugarelli fought back to take the third, despite the American's barrage of drop shots and passes. Zugarelli was hampered by a painful right shoulder, which needed a pain-killing injection before the match. It was in efficient rather than an inspired final, with a display of aggression from both players.

    Sensing the American's nervousness, Zugarelli made a spirited bid to win the fourth set, but Gerulaitis hung on for victory and his perseverance was rewarded with a 6-2, 7-6, 3-6, 7-6 win. The 21,000 U.S. dollar Gerulaitis picked up for the title helped offset a 19,000 dollar find imposed for failing to play against Bjorn Borg in the United States.

    "It was worth losing the 19,000 dollars even if they had just given me than trophy" Gerulaitis said afterwards. He is the first U.S. player to win the Italian title for nearly 20 years.
