Austrian Niki Lauda who has already won the 1975 world championship, qualified for the pole position by breaking the lap record in his Ferrari.
Former world champion Stirling Moss was on hand with advice for British hopeful James Hunt, who clocked the fifteenth fastest time out of a total field of 24 cars. Hunt currently lies fourth on the drivers' championship table.
However, Ronnie Peterson of Sweden, driving a Texaco-Marlboro-McLaren caused pre-race speculation among fans by clocking the second fastest time in the qualifying rounds. He currently lies second on the World championship table.
Carlos Reutemann of Argentina is another strong contender . Driving his ??? ??? , he clocked the third fastest time.
Local favourite was Brett Lunger of the U.S.A. .... who came to grief when his ??? ??? into a barrier on a new stretch of track. He came way down on sap time - in eighteenth place. He walked away unhurt from the smash.
Another British driver with high hopes was Tom Pryce, who chalked up the seventh fastest lap time in his U.O.P. shadow.
Mario Andretti, the other United States entry in the Grand Prix did better than ??? lunger -- clocking fifth best lap time in his Penske PC-3
SYNOPSIS: Watkins Glen, New York , the track for this year's United States grand Prix. stirling Moss, former world champion gives British driver James Hunt some advice before the qualifying rounds in which he was placed fifteenth.
??? Peterson of Sweden took fourteenth place in the qualifier, directly ahead of Hunt, while Emerson Fittipaldi of Brazil, clocked the second fastest time.
Carlos Reutemann of Argentina, was another man to watch. Currently third in the world championship Table he clocked the third fastest time.
Reutemann led Frenchman Michel LeClere, who clocked one of the slowest times.
They were followed by Brett Lunger of the United States and Clay Regazzoni of Switzerland.
Austrian Niki Lauda, already the world championship winner, clocked the fastest time. Britain's Tom Pryce did well with seventh position on the time table.
