  • Description

BRITISH RIDER MIKE HAILWOOD WON THE 500 C.C. MOTORCYCLE RACE AT IMOLA, ITALY, YESTERDAY (MONDAY) AFTER HE WAS FORCED TO RETIRE FROM AN EARLIER EVENT, THE INTERNATIONAL SHELL GOLD CUP FOR 350 C.C. MACHINES. THE WIN IS RECOGNISED AS HAILWOOD'S PASSPORT TO THE FORTHCOMING GERMAN GRAND PRIX.

HAILWOOD, WHO HAS BEEN WORLD CHAMPION NINE TIMES, WON THE 500 C.C. RACE ON A HONDA. HE COVERED THE 23-LAP COURSE IN 46 MINUTES AND 55.2 SECONDS, TO WIN AT AN AVERAGE LAP SPEED OF 91.68 MILES AN HOUR.

SECOND TO HAILWOOD WAS GIACOMO AGOSTINI, THE ITALIAN RIDER WHO IS RECOGNISED AS HAILWOOD'S BIGGEST RIVAL. AGOSTINI, RIDING AN M.V. MACHINE, FINISHED IN 47 MINUTES 15.9 SECONDS, WITH ANOTHER BRITISH RIDER, JOHN COOPER, THIRD.

HEAVY RAIN MADE RACING CONDITIONS DIFFICULT ON THE IMOLA CIRCUIT AND ONLY 15 OF THE 25 STARTERS FINISHED THE RACE.

GEAR TROUBLE FORCED HAILWOOD OUT IN THE GOLD CUP RACE, AFTER HE HAD LEAD FOR SIX LAPS. ANOTHER ITALIAN, RENZO PASOLINI, WON THE RACE ON A BENNELLI.
