  • Description

In Saigon on Saturday, as the hour for the start of the ceasefire approached, the funeral took place for the venerable Thich Thien Hoa, leader of the An Quang Pagoda, which forms a central group of South Vietnamese opposition to President Nguyen Van Thieu. He died last at the age of 63.

The Buddhist leader was chairman of the Unified Buddhist Church, which has followers throughout South Vietnam.

The An Quang Pagoda, in Saigon's Cholon district, has long been a focal point for anti-Go ornament forces in both Chambers of Parliament.

The Venerable Thich Tien Hoa was very prominent during the period in the late 60s when Buddhist monks expressed their opposition to President Thieu's regime by self-immolation by fire.
