Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to exchange ambassadors and avoid further clashes on their common border. The Cambodian government has also agreed to release an unspecified number of Thai fishermen who were arrested for alleged violation of Cambodian territorial waters.
SYNOPSIS: The improvement in relations between the two countries follows a visit to Cambodia by a Thai goodwill mission which returned home to Bangkok on Thursday (2 February). The 18-member mission was headed by Foreign Minister Upadit Pachariyangkun. It was the first visit of its kind since the Communist takeover in Cambodia in 1975. Addressing newsmen at the airport, Dr Upadit said that the Thai and Cambodian people shared a common desire for peace.
