  • Description

THREE OF THE WORLD'S LEADING SKI NATIONS - AUSTRIA, SWITZERLAND AND WEST GERMANY - WALKED OUT OF THE PRE-OLYMPIC MEETING IN THE FRENCH ALPS YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) IN PROTEST AGAINST THEIR ACCOMMODATION. THE ROW OVERSHADOWED THE SPECIAL WOMEN'S SLALOM, WON BY FLORENCE STEURER WHO LED A CLEAN SWEEP BY FRENCH SKIERS.

THE AUSTRIAN, SWISS AND WEST GERMAN TEAMS ALSO CLAIMED THE SKI RUNS HAD NOT BEEN PROPERLY PREPARED. THE ROW CAME ON TOP OF ILL-FEELING CAUSED BY AN INTERNATIONAL SKI FEDERATION RULING LIMITING THE NUMBER OF SKIERS FOR FOREIGN TEAMS. FRANCE, AS HOST NATION, WAS NOT SUBJECT TO THE RULING.

NEWSMEN VISITING THE AUSTRIAN TEAM AS THEY PREPARED TO LEAVE BY COACH FOR HOME, FOUND 12 OF THEM HOUSED IN A HOTEL LOFT WITH ONE WASH BASIN BETWEEN THEM.

THE WALK-OUT ACTION WAS CALLED "EXCESSIVE" BY FRENCH OFFICIALS.

IN THE ABSENCE OF THEIR TOP RIVALS, FRANCE MADE AN EXPECTED CLEAN SWEEP OF THE SPECIAL WOMEN'S SLALOM, WITH FIRST PLACE GOING TO RISING STAR FLORENCE STEURER, AGED 17. THE REIGNING WORLD SLALOM CHAMPION, ANNIE FAMOSE, TOOK SECOND PLACE AND THE OLYMPIC CHAMPION, CHRISTINE BERANGER-GOITSCHEL THIRD.
