  • Description

For many years the meet familiar sight on the Dutch landscape has been the windmill.

Taking advantage of the flat, wind-swept landscape, Dutch farmers have used the huge sails of the windmills to grid their corn, pump their water, and irrigate their land.

Then came modern flour mills and diesel pumping engines - and the windmill had been put out of a job.

But, with their love of tradition, the Dutch kept many of the old mills and seen found that they had made a sensible investment against the machines breaking down.

So, every once in a while, Dutch people in their hundreds turn out to see the big mills turning again as their owners test them against the possibility of their use in an emergency.

This covey of windmills stand in the Kinderdijk area close to Dordrecht an area that has been flooded 30 times in the last five centuries.

Although diesel pumping engines stand by in the event of an emergency, the old mills are else capable of playing their part.

Then, with every mill tested and found to be in working order, the sails are slowed to a standstill and the local people - having seen this rare sight in modern days - disperse to their homes to talk of old times again.
