    ABOUT 800 NATIONAL SERVICEMEN YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) SHOWED THEIR SUPPORT OF PLANS BY THE TANZANIAN GOVERNMENT FOR TWO YEARS' COMPULSORY NATIONAL SERVICE FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL LEADERS AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS. THEY MARCHED THROUGH DAR ES SALAAM TO COUNTER A MARCH THE PREVIOUS DAY BY UNIVERSITY STUDENTS PROTESTING AGAINST CONSCRIPTION.

    ON SATURDAY PRESIDENT JULIUS NYERERE ORDERS NEARLY 400 STUDENTS TO LEAVE DAR ES SALAAM UNIVERSITY FOR DEMONSTRATING AGAINST THE PLANS AND SAID THAT THE STUDENTS HAD MADE A MISTAKE BY THREATENING HIM WITH STUDENT UPRISING SIMILAR TO THAT OF INDONESIA.

    THE STUDENTS WHO DEMONSTRATED ON SATURDAY CARRIED PLACARDS THAT READ "THE NATIONAL SERVICE TERMS ARE HARSH -- COLONIALISM WAS BETTER."
    THE GOVERNMENT'S PLANS CALL FOR FOUR MONTHS OF THE TWO-YEAR TERM TO BE SPENT IN MILITARY AND OTHER TRAINING. ONE MONTH WILL BE SPENT ON NATION-BUILDING PROJECTS AND 18 MONTHS OF UNIFORMED EMPLOYMENT OUTSIDE.

    YESTERDAY PRESIDENT NYERERE TOLD THE LOYAL NATIONAL SERVICEMEN: "THESES STUDENTS PRETENDED TO BE DISCIPLINED ALREADY. THE FACT IS THEY FEAR GOING INTO NATIONAL SERVICE...."
