    The 11th International Meeting of Submariners was held on Friday and Saturday (21-22 May) in Hamburg, with more than 600 submariners and their families attending. Representatives from the submarine services of France, the United States, Austria, Britain, as well as those who served in the submarine forces of Germany during the two World Wars, took part in a special memorial service at sea. Sailing from Hamburg to the North Sea, near the Island of Heligoland, they honoured those who have died in the submarine service, both in peace and war. Germany alone lost 4,744 submariners during World War One, and 27,491 in the Second World War.

    SYNOPSIS: More than six-hundred submariners and their families attended the Eleventh International Meeting of Submariners in Hamburg last weekend. On Saturday many of them sailed to the North Sea for a memorial service.

    Taking part were representatives and veterans from the submarine services of France, the United States, Austria Norway, and Britain, as well as those who served in the submarine forces of Germany during the two World Wars. This special service at sea honoured those who have died while serving in the submarine service - both in peace and war.

    Germany alone lost nearly five-thousand submariners during World War Two, and over twenty-seven-thousand in the Second World War.

    Besides the memorial service, the programme for the two-day meeting included sightseeing in Hamburg, a tour of naval vessels and social engagements for the submariners and their families.

    The welcoming letter for the undersea veterans spoke of the growing friendship among the attending members from the different countries, despite the variety of languages spoken. During the Hamburg meeting, the letter continued, it is hoped that the submariners can continue to contribute to the formation of a European Union.
