  • Description

PRESIDENT KAUNDA OF ZAMBIA HAD SOME HARD WORDS FOR LOCAL COUNCILLORS IN A SPEECH HE MADE IN THE COPPER MINING TOWN OF MUFULIRA AT THE WEEKEND (SUNDAY). THE PRESIDENT WARNED AGAINST CORRUPTION, NEPOTISM AND "BICKERING FOR POSITIONS" AMONG THE COUNCILLORS.

THE SIX-MILE ROUTE FROM MUFULIRA'S AIRSTRIP TO THE CITY'S CONFERENCE HALL WAS LINED WITH A WELCOMING CROWD OF THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN.

A GROUP OF DANCERS LED THE PRESIDENT'S CAR INTO THE CITY, AND DRUMMERS PLAYED AS HE ARRIVED AT THE HALL.

LATER PRESIDENT KAUNDA TOLD THE COUNCILLORS: "IT IS TIME WE ALL GOT DOWN TO WORK FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE COUNTRY. FORGET ABOUT PRETTY SQUABBLES."
MUFULIRA IS A MINING TOWN ON ZAMBIA'S COPPER BELT. IT HAS A POPULATION OF 85,000, MOSTLY MINERS AND THEIR FAMILIES.

POLITICAL ALLEGIANCES IN MUFULIRA HAVE ONLY RECENTLY SWUNG THE GOVERNMENT'S WAY. IT IS BELIEVED THAT THIS WAS PRESIDENT KAUNDA'S FIRST OFFICIAL VISIT TO THE CITY SINCE BEING MADE PRESIDENT.
