TRANSCRIPT: "WE'VE GOT TO LEARN TO ACCEPT THE TRUTH, AND THEN WE GOTTA LEARN, AS MISSISSIPPIANS, THERE'S NOT A SINGLE ONE OF YOU OUT THERE, AND I CHALLENGE YOU, WHO HAVEN'T BEEN NURSED OR TAKEN CARE OF BY ONE OF US. VERY FEW OF YOU. BECAUSE WE ARE PART OF YOU. SURE WE WORK FOR YOU AS A SERVANT. BUT THEN SOME OF YOU OUT THERE NOW - I DON'T CARE HOW MUCH HATE YOU MAY THINK YOU HAVE IN YOUR HEART - I DON'T BELIEVE YOU HAVE ANY. BUT I BELIEVE YOU KNOW BACK IN YOUR MIND THAT SOMEWHERE "A NEGRO TOOK CARE OF ME. A NEGRO CARRIED ME TO SCHOOL, A NEGRO COOKED ME BISCUITS IN THE MORNING, A NEGRO COOKED ME CORN BREAD AT NIGHT, A NEGRO CARRIED ME DOWN TO THE STORE; AND WHILE MOTHER AND DAD WENT OUT TO A PARTY, SOME POOR NEGRO SIT THERE AND WATCH OVER ME WHILE I SLEPT." SEE, THIS IS WHAT WE GOTTA THINK ABOUT. WE HAVE TAKEN CARE OF YOU AND WE HAVE HONOURED YOU AND RESPECTED YOU. AND NOW PLEASE, LET'S CHANGE THEY TIDE, DO UNTO US AS WE'VE DONE UNTO YOU. GIVE US A CHANCE. YOU SAY THAT WE ARE LAZY AND WE DON'T WANT TO WORK. GIVE US A CHANCE. HELP US TO GET JOBS, AND I GUARANTEE YOU. WE'LL EARN OUR BIT..." (APPLAUSE)

Background: CHARLES EVERS, A MISSISSIPPI NEGRO CAMPAIGNING FOR A SEAT IN THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS IN THIS YEAR'S ELECTIONS, RECEIVED A WARM RECEPTION THIS WEEK HE ADDRESSED AN AUDIENCE AT MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE, OUTSIDE JACKSON, THE STATE CAPITAL. HE WAS THE FIRST NEGRO EVER TO SPEAK AT THE CONSERVATIVE, BAPTIST, SEGREGATIONIST SCHOOL.

EVERS FACES A CONSIDERABLE CHALLENGE IN HIS FIGHT TO WIN A SEAT IN CONGRESS. THERE ARE 50,000 MORE WHITES THAN NEGROES IN HIS DISTRICT, BUT HE IS RELYING LARGELY ON THE WIDE DIVISION OF LOYALTY AMONG HIS SEVERAL WHITE OPPONENTS. CHARLES EVERS' BROTHERS, MEDGAR, WAS ASSASSINATED AT HIS HOME IN JACKSON IN 1963. SINCE THEN CHARLES EVERS HAS BECOME THE OUTSTANDING NEGRO POLITICAL VOICE IN HIS HOME STATE.

HE CAME TO THE CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATURE BY WAY OF AN EARLY BUSINESS CAREER AND LATER SECRETARYSHIP OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COLOURED PEOPLE. HE HAS A WIFE AND THREE SMALL DAUGHTERS.

IN HIS ADDRESS TO THE MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE AUDIENCE HE RECEIVED NO HECKLING OR INTERJECTIONS, AND THE APPLAUSE AT THE END OF HIS SPEECH WAS SUSTAINED AND ENTHUSIASTIC. HE TOLD HIS AUDIENCE:
