  • Description

The United States committed itself to the economic development of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and pledged special attention to improving market access for their products.

Economic delegations of the five ASEAN countries - Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines - started a three-day ASEAN-US dialogue on Thursday in Manila to discuss a US roll in regional economic development.

In an opening speech, Philippines Foreign Secretary Carlos Romulo, Chairman of the ASEAN-US dialogue, asked the United States to support and assist the ASEAN industrialization programme.

US Under-Secretary of state for Economic Affairs Richard N. Cooper responded to play a bigger role in the regional trade and investment.

Mr. Cooper also stressed the US remained engaged in maintaining peace and stability in the region and believed that a constructive relationship with China was also important for global and regional equilibrium.
