Background: A MASSIVE ARMOURED RELIEF COLUMN REACHED THE DUC CO SPECIAL FORCES CAMP AFTER BEING THREE TIMES BY COMMUNIST VIETCONG TROOPS BETWEEN NEARBY PLEIKU AND THE CAMP. THE SPECIAL FORCES CAMP SITUATED SOME 215 MILES NORTHEAST OF SAIGON AND SEVEN MILES FROM THE CAMBODIAN BORDER, CAME UNDER VIETCONG ATTACK IN THE PAST THREE WEEKS. THE VIETCONG -- SIX BATTALION-STRONG -- HAVE SINCE WITHDRAWN TO THEIR BASES SOUTHWEST OF THE CAMP. THEY ARE BELIEVED TO BE PREPARING A COUNTER-ATTACK. TOTALLING MORE THAN THREE THOUSAND MEN, SOME ARE BELIEVED TO BE NORTH VIETNAMESE REGULARS.

DURING THE BATTLE, MORE THAN 400 VIETCONG WERE CLAIMED TO HAVE BEEN ELIMINATED. SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT CASUALTIES WERE DESCRIBED AS MODERATE.

THE VIETNAMESE PARATROOPS AIRLIFTED TO THE CAMP, HAVE JOINED FORCES WITH OTHER GOVERNMENT ELEMENTS IN DEFENDING THE CAMP.

TO STRENGTHEN THE CAMP FROM A VIETCONG COUNTER-ATTACK, EXTRA BARBED WIRE BARRICADES WERE SET UP AROUND THE CAMP. THE UNITED STATES 173RD AIRBORNE BRIGADE AND THE SECOND BRIGADE, FIRST ARMY DIVISION, HURRIEDLY FLOWN TO THE CAMP TO JOIN IN THE FIGHT, HAVE BEGUN TO DIG DEFENCES ALONG THE PERIMETER.

CONTINUED AIR STRIKES AND ARTILLERY BOMBARDMENTS AT VIETCONG HIDEOUTS IN AND AROUND THE AREA HAVE FORCED MANY VILLAGERS TO POUR INTO THE CAMP TO AWAIT EVACUATION TO NEARBY PLEIKU. AN AMERICAN DOCTOR ATTENDED TO THE SICK VILLAGERS, INCLUDING SOME WITH WOUNDS WHICH HAVE DEVELOPED INTO INCURABLE SORES......THEN CAME THE DISTRIBUTION OF RICE: STAPLE FOOD OF THE VIETNAMESE PEOPLE. A NORTH VIETNAMESE REGULAR WHO WAS CAPTURED DURING THE BATTLE ALSO HAD HIS SORE TREATED.

THE DUC CO CAMP WHICH IS NOW CALM AFTER THE STORM, DISPLAYED THE VARIOUS TYPES OF WEAPONS SEIZED FROM THE VIETCONG AND THE NORTH VIETNAMESE IN THE BATTLE.

A TANK STOOD BY AN AMERICAN AIRCRAFT WHICH WAS USED TO EVACUATE THE VILLAGERS TO PLEIKU WHILE ARTILLERY CONTINUOUSLY RAINED SHELLS ON VIETCONG HIDEOUTS.
