  • Description

JOMO KENYATTA, FORMER MANAGER OF THE MAU MAU TERRORIST ORGANIZATION IN KENYA, ADDRESSED HIS FIRST PUBLIC MEETING IN NAIROBI, SEPT 2, SINCE BEING FREED FROM RESTRICTION. THIS WAS AN UNEXPECTED MOVE, AS HIS SCHEDULE SAID HIS FIRST MEETING WAS TO TAKE PLACE AT MOMBASA, SEPT 3.

HE SPOKE IN SUPPORT OF THE KENYA EDUCATION FUND (IT EXISTS TO HELP BEND AFRICAN STUDENTS OVERSEAS). THE CROWD WAS MUCH SMALLER THAN EXPECTED: ALTHOUGH IT WAS ONLY TWO DAYS AFTER PAY-DAY, PEOPLE WERE OBVIOUSLY RELUCTANT TO PAY IN SUPPORT OF THE FUND OR TO HEAR MR. KENYATTA SPEAK.

IN A BRIEF REFERENCE TO POLITICS, HE SAID: "WE WILL CONTINUE WHAT WE WERE SAYING IN 1952. MY BROTHERS, THIS IS THE SAME KENYATTA YOU USED TO SEE THEN." SECRETARY-GENERAL TOM MBOYA OF THE KENYA AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION ALSO SPOKE - AND RECEIVED A WARMER RECEPTION FROM THE CROWD THAN MR. KENYATTA.
