  • Description

THE TURKISH EXHIBITION SHIP ANKARA IS IN TILBURY DOCKS, LONDON, WITH A FLOATING DISPLAY OF TRADITIONAL TURKISH DANCING.

THE ANKARA SAILED FROM ISTANBUL LAST MONTH, AND HAS STOPPED AT NAPLES, BARCELONA AND LISBON ON THE VOYAGE TO BRITAIN. ON THE RETURN JOURNEY SHE WILL PUT IN TO LE HAVRE, TANGIERS AND SYRACUSE.

IN EACH PORT THE DESKS OF THE SHIP ARE TRANSFORMED INTO A FLOATING THEATRE OF DANCE. THE FIRST GROUP OF PERFORMERS IS FROM GAZIANTEP IN THE SOUTH-EAST OF TURKEY. THEIR DANCES PRESENT THE SEASONAL CYCLE OF VILLAGE LIFE...THE JOY, FOR INSTANCE, THAT MARKS AN ABUNDANT HARVEST.

FROM THE NORTH-WEST OF THE COUNTRY, A LESS PASTORAL PERFORMANCE AS MALE DANCERS ENACT THE FIERCENESS AND COMRADESHIP OF MEDIEVAL WARRIORS. THEY COME FROM BURSA, THE CITY THAT BECAME THE CAPITAL OF THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE ALMOST SEVEN CENTURIES AGO.
