    Cesar Chavez, the 43-year-old United Farm Workers (UFW) Union leader, was released from jail in Monterey, California, on Wednesday (December 23), following a State Supreme Court order quashing a judge's earlier decision to jail Chavez for contempt of Court. When he was released, Chavez spoke of the bad conditions in the local jail.

    The United Farm workers have been boycotting a California lettuce grower because of his association with a rival Union - and, when Chavez was ordered to lift the boycott, he refused to do so and was accused of contempt and jailed on December 4th. Since the, Chavez had has the support of many political and entertainment figures in his battle for release - notably, the Kennedys-and Ethel, the widow of Bobby Kennedy, was among the hundreds who were on a vigil outside the jail prior to Chavez' release.

    The Supreme Court's decision was made without comment until it hears the Union's argument against the original injunction - but no date has as yet been set for the new hearing.

    Chavez, who has called for non-violence among his followers, has nevertheless said that the boycott will continue.
