  • Description

Cars taking part in the second Asian rally reached Delhi yesterday (Tuesday, Nov the 10th) on the gruelling 4,200 mile (6,700 km) endurance test across five countries.

The Minister for Transport, Mr Iqbal Singh, met the first cars into the city. Of the 60 which started only about half were still running at Delhi.

Most cars reached Delhi well within the set time limit, and many waited outside the control point so they would arrive exactly on time. The drivers were given enthusiastic welcomes as they drove up to the control point.

After an overnight stop in Delhi the cars will continue on through Bengal and Nepal to the finish in Dacca, East Pakistan.

The rally which started from Teheran is sponsored by the United Nations Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East (ECAFE) inaugurates the Teheran to Dacca section of the Asian High way which will eventually link 14 countries from Turkey to Vietnam and Singapore with 37,000 miles (60,000 kms) of all-weather road.

Last year the first Asian Rally, was run over the sections from Vientiane, in Laos, to Singapore, when that section was completed.

This year's rally takes the competitor over some of the world's most rugged terrain, including the foothills of the Himalaya mountains and the dusty plains of Pakistan and India, and along ancient camel caravan routes and old military roads of India.
