  • Description

THE THAI GOVERNMENT, IN A BID TO RECOVER OFFICIAL FUNDS MISAPPROPRIATED BY FIELD MARSHAL SARIT THANARAT, THE LATE PRIME MINISTER, IS AUCTIONING HIS PROPERTY INCLUDING SOME 71 LIMOUSINES AND SEVERAL LUXURY BUNGALOWS IN BANGKOK. IN ITS FIRST MOVE, THE GOVERNMENT ON MONDAY PUT 41 OF THE LUXURY CARS UP FOR SALE.

MARCHAL SARIT IS THOUGHT TO HAVE AMASSED A FORTUNE OF NEARLY 3-MILLION BAHT (GBP 5-MILLION STERLING) DURING THE TIME HE WAS PRIME MINISTER FROM 1957 TO 1963. WHEN HE DIED MOST PEOPLE KNEW HE WAS A WEALTHY MAN, BUT THE FULL EXTENT OF HIS WEALTH DID NOT BECOME EVIDENT UNTIL HIS WIFE AND FAMILY BEGAN LEGAL ACTION TO GET THEIR SHARE OF THE ESTATE. AS FAR AS IT IS KNOWN, HE WAS NOT VERY WELL OFF BEFORE HE STAGED THE BLOODLESS COUP WHICH BROUGHT HIM TO POWER, SO IT TOOK HIM ONLY SEVEN YEARS TO BECOME ONE OF THE RICHEST MEN IN ASIA.

HE IS SAID TO HAVE MISUSED STATE FUNDS TOTALLING SOME GBP10-MILLION STERLING, A LARGE PROPORTION OF IT COMING FROM THE STATE LOTTERY FUND OF WHICH HE WAS CHAIRMAN.
