  • Description

Since 1909 the Royal Netherlands League for Physical Culture has sponsored long distance marching and on Friday (23 July), at least half a million people turned out to welcome the 18,000 participants from all over the world at the finish of this year's famous Nijmegen march.

SYNOPSIS: It was the diamond jubilee of the event, and after three days of cold and wet weather, the sun shone for the marchers as they parade into Nijmegen, Netherlands, on the final day. They had left the town four days before at the start of the 30-mile (50 km) round journey.

Teams from 27 countries took part in the march. Here Girl Guides form Sweden, which had one of the biggest contingents in the event, parade past the welcoming crowed. The Dutch provided the largest number of marchers, 9,139, followed by Britain with 1,1813.

The march is an excellent excuse for the townspeople to celebrate and for a week Nijmegen takes on a carnival atmosphere. Cheering crowds, bands playing and a hectic high-life make the march a memorable occasion. No one actually wins the march, but everyone is given a medal for completing it. And to top it all, Nijmegen residents put on an aptly named Blister Ball.
