A Japanese researcher, Dr. Chuji Fujita, has predicted that in four or five years time artificial blood will be in general use in hospitals around the world. He may be on the verge of a medical breakthrough.
At a research laboratory in Osaka, two beagle hounds have been living on a blood composition comprising eighty per cent artificial blood and twenty per cent of their own blood. The dogs have been living normally for the last four months on this composition.
Numerous guinea pigs and rabbits have also existed for long periods on artificial blood, and to this date no animal's death has directly been caused by the research. Their life span has been determined only by the need for autopsy examinations.
