  • Description

Cuban Prime Minister Fidel Castro and President Osvaldo Dorticos were at Havana airport to give an official farewell to a Cuban medical team which has left to work in the aftermath of the May 31st Peruvian earthquake.

Prime Minister Castro asked the members of the team to work hard, and offer the stricken people of Peru the solidarity of the Cuban population.

This is the first contingent of doctors and nurses to go to Peru from Cuba, but the Cubans have been operating an airlift of medical supplies from Havana to Lima.

The latest boost to the international relief operating in Peru was the arrival of the American aircraft carrier Guam on June 9, with its 16 vitally needed helicopters. They have been pressed into action distributing supplies to remote northern areas of the country. U.S. air-force C-130 transport planes have also been used.

Among other nations to supply air support are Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, and Canada.
