  • Description

Bomb explosions rocked cities and town throughout Argentina today (Thursday) marking the start of a 10-hour nationwide anti-government strike. Bomb blasts damaged the homes of an army officer and railway official in Rosario, 190 miles (300 kms) northwest of Buenos Aires and two police experts were injured when a bomb they were defusing exploded, in the same city.

In the industrial city of Avellaneda, near Buenos Aires yesterday (Wednesday), one man was killed when fire engulfed a major sector of a meat packing plant. More than two hundred and 50 firemen and 24 fire engines were called in to fight the blaze.

The fire destroyed a two-storey building housing the processing and cooking sections of the La Negra packing plant and a three-storey freezing plant alongside it.

At least 14 people, including eight firemen, were treated for suffocation by smoke from the fire which also killed at least one hundred head of cattle awaiting slaughter.

The La Negra plant belongs to the Argentine Corporation of Meat Producers -- a state-subsidised private company mainly owned by cattle ranchers. Cause of the fire is not yet known.
