    Before liberation, the Kai Lan Coal Mine in North China used to be managed by foreign capitalists from several nations. Labour conditions were extremely poor and productivity very low. The mine has changed beyond recognition today, and it is now the second largest coal mine in China.

    This is one of the new shafts that will shortly go into operation.

    Water pumps and air compressors have been installed. All the equipment in this shaft are new products of Chinese industry.

    The workers are building a transportation line some three kilometres long.

    The annual output of this new shaft is estimated at one million eight hundred thousand tons.
