Background: The last of 60 Thor nuclear missile supplied to Britain by the United States arrived at North Luffenham R.A.F. missile base, Rutland, Mar. 10.

It came from California in a giant Globemaster transport, and to mark the occasion, Colonel Clair Peterson of the United States Air Force brought with him a plaque commemorating the completion of the deliveries.

North Luffenham is one of Britain's four bases for Thors - each base now having 15 missiles. The U.S. has also supplied spare parts for the Thor system, and is helping to train the R.A.F. missile crews.

The Thor is 65 feet long, and its fuel tanks take up much of the large space inside. Its maximum range, proved in test firings, is over 1700 miles.

With the deliveries completed, the Thor now becomes one of the R.A.F.'s most important operational weapons.

A special version of the Thor is to be fired as a space probe by the Americans later today, Mar. 11. It will be aimed in the direction of Venus. The first attempt to fire it, Mar. 10, had to be cancelled at the last minute because of a fuelling fault.
