  • Description

The body of the Duke of Windsor, who died last Sunday, arrived in Britain today (Wednesday) after being flown from France in a Royal Air Force VC-10.

The aircraft was met at RAF Benson, an Air Force base in Oxfordshire, by the Duke and Duchess of Kent.

The Duchess of Windsor, who was to have accompanied her husband's body on the flight, remained at her home in Paris, France, on the advice of her doctor. It is hoped she will be able to travel to Britain on Friday.

The aircraft bringing the coffin landed at RAF Benson at 11 a.m. Government Ministers and senior members of he services were at the air base with the French Ambassador, M. Geoffrey de Courcel.

As the VC-10 taxied up to a guard of honour on the tarmac, a bearer party of eight Royal Air Force non-commissioned officers and aircraftmen moved forward to lift the coffin from the aircraft. Light rain began to fall.

While the Royal Salute was sounded, the party carried the coffin, draped with the duke's personal standard, to a hearse, which then led the cortege to a chapel on the air base.

The Duke's body then remained in the church on a catafalque guarded by RAF officers until it was later moved to Windsor for the private family funeral at St. George's Chapel on Monday.
