Background: About 10,000 demonstrators, including men, women and children, from nine opposition parties took part in a protest against Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's government on February 13. The protest took the form of a Demands Day and a march to Mrs Gandhi's residence, although police stopped the demonstrators from reaching their destination. The protestors' demands included a strengthening of the public distribution system which guarantees supplies of essential commodities at reasonable prices, and the withdrawal of the National Security Act. The opposition groups also called for the enforcement of minimum wages for agricultural labourers. As they marched, the demonstrators chanted anti-Gandhi and anti-government slogans. Later, leaders of the different parties addressed the crowd. It was a peaceful demonstration.
