Background: Soviet skaters are dominating the thirteenth International Ice Skating Tournament in Moscow. Irina Vorobieva and Igor Lisovski won the pairs competition on Thursday (29 November) but only after their main Soviet rivals dropped out.
SYNOPSIS: The tournament which is regarded as a build-up to the Lake Placid Winter Olympics marked a comeback for the legendary husband and wife team of Irina Rodnina and Aleksandr Zaitsev. They'd been out of international competition for the last two years with the birth of their first child. Irina has been a world champion ten times and Olympic champion twice in figure skating. Aleksandr has six world championships and an Olympic gold medal to his credit. Against competitors from fourteen other countries the couple easily won this short programme of the current tournament, but didn't contest the finals. Their return to the rink showed they'd lost none of their style and grace.
