Background: INTRODUCTION: Show jumping...and British rider David Broome has become undisputed leader of the European League of a world-wide competition. He moved into top place on Monday (21 December) after winning the main event, Radio Rentals Grand Prix, at Olympia, in London.

SYNOPSIS: Broome rode Queensway Philco to victory. The event was a qualifier for the Volvo World Cup Holland, a much-coveted prize for riders.Broome had heavy pressure, having to ride the grey, which was a bred in the United States, first in the second and final jump-off.His nerve and the horse were equal to the task...a clear round in a time -- thirty-two-point eight seconds -- that was daunting for the following riders.

Derek Ricketts, on Coldstream, made a bold effort, but was to finis more than three seconds slower than Broome. This, the only other clear round, was good enough to earn second place for Ricketts.Ricketts's brisk charges at the jumps, and his control, showed he has regained the vitality recently missing from his performances.

Thomas Fruhmann of Austria was third behind the two Britons. He took his horse, Bandit, around the course in thirty-four-point four seconds, faster than Ricketts, but hit the last fence. This cost him four points.

Another victory for David Broome to add to a long and impressive list.Earlier in the evening, he shed a tear after learning that one of his favourite horses, Queensway Sportsman, was being retired.
