  • Description

JIM CLARK OF SCOTLAND BROKE JUAN FANGIO'S RECORD OF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MOTOR GRAND PRIX VICTORIES YESTERDAY (MONDAY) WHEN HE WON THE SOUTH AFRICAN EVENT IN RECORD BREAKING TIME AT THE KYALAMI TRACK NEAR JOHANNESBURG. THE SCOT NOTCHED UP HIS 25TH GRAND PRIX VICTORY TO BEAT THE 24 WINS BY THE ARGENTINIAN WHO WON THE WORLD CROWN FIVE TIMES.

BEFORE THE RACE THERE WAS A COLOURFUL DISPLAY OF VETERAN CARS DRIVEN BY THE GRAND PRIX DRIVERS BEFORE THEIR TWO HOUR ORDEAL OVER 80 LAPS OF THE KYALAMI TRACK. THE HEAT WAS SO INTENSE THAT LESS THAN HALF THE CARS FINISHED THE COURSE.

CLARK TOOK THE LEAD AT THE END OF THE SECOND LAP AND FROM THEN ON HIS VICTORY SEEMED NEVER IN DOUBT, SHORT OF MECHANICAL FAILURE. GRAHAM HILL OF ENGLAND WHO, LIKE JIM CLARK, WAS DRIVING A FORD-LOTUS, CAME SECOND, 25.3 SECONDS BEHIND CLARK.

THIRD OF THE NINE FINISHERS OUT OF 23 STARTERS WAS JOCHEN RINDT OF AUSTRIA IN A BRABHAM-REPCO. FOURTH WAS CHRIS AMON OF NEW ZEALAND IN A FERRARI AND FIFTH WAS DENNY HULME, NEW ZEALAND'S CURRENT WORLD CHAMPION, IN A MCLAREN -BRM. JEAN PIERRE BELTOISE OF FRANCE FINISHED SIXTH IN A MATRA.

THE RACE WAS MARRED BY A CRASH WHEN LUDOVIC SCARFIOTTI OF ITALLY SPUN OFF THE TRACK IN HIS COOPER-MASERATI AND WAS TAKEN TO HOSPITAL WITH BURNS CAUSED BY A BROKEN OIL PIPE. HIS CONDITION IS DESCRIBED AS QUITE COMFORTABLE.

CLARK'S RECORD TIME FOR THE RACE WAS ONE HOUR 53 MINUTES 56.6 SECONDS AT AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 107.42 MILES AN HOUR (172.87 K.P.H.).
